Our Wish for Snow!

Even though it has been unseasonably warm here in Northern Virginia, our students wish for snow!

We are busy creating winter themed art this month and if we are lucky, we just might see some snow!

Today was a perfect day to start our mitten designs, in first and second grade, as the temps did drop just in time to head back to school. I think there even was a scattering of wet snow on my car windows early this morning.

Our mittens bring in the art elements of line, color, and design. Students will add a hand - cut paper snowflake to their mittens at our next class. I think they are really fantastic and so colorful! I loved to hear that the students remembered the names of the lines we learned about, back in September!

Ask your child to tell you some of the different names for lines. There are some cool ones and the children loved learning the names and drawing the different lines.

The fifth grade students worked on the first stage of their Winter Birch Tree art.

They used tape to mask out the trees and painted over the entire paper with a water color wash. While the paint was still wet, they sprinkled salt on the surface. At our next class they will see the surprise when they rub the salt away and peel off the tape. They will add highlights and bark to the trees! This is a really fun project and includes art elements of texture, line, space and contrast.
